OUR HISTORY
Adelaide Hydro Fresh has a rich and evolving history, spanning over 50 years.
It all started with our parents, Angelo and Gianna Russo, who started their farming journey growing onions and potatoes, right here in Virginia, South Australia. Over time, they expanded their farming to include cauliflower and cabbage, becoming well-known in the local community for their dedication to quality and commitment to consistency.
The turning point for our farm came in the mid 80’s when Dad was introduced to NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) hydroponic lettuce. Embracing this emerging innovative opportunity, our parents made a bold shift to hydroponics, revolutionising our farming practices. This marked the beginning of a new era for our farm, allowing us to provide fresh, clean produce with better control over growing conditions and sustainability. Collectively, we’ve introduced modern systems and expanding our produce range to include a wider variety of lettuces, herbs, and basil.
With strong partnerships, including a pivotal relationship with Woolworths, Adelaide Hydro Fresh grew rapidly. What started with a few rows of plants at our original Virginia farm has since expanded to over 20 acres of hydroponic systems across two properties. My brother Paul and I (Mark) have taken the reins, but, as with all family businesses, it’s truly a team effort. We’re lucky to have Dad still keeping himself busy across both farms, weighing in on decisions, and helping bring our shared vision to life. Mum, meanwhile, keeps the office running smoothly, handling the business side and keeping us all in check. It’s a full family operation, with the kids running around after school and us just trying to keep up!
We’re incredibly proud of how far our family has come. We remain wholeheartedly dedicated to continuing the evolution that started over 50 years ago, always striving to provide the highest quality, fresh produce to families across Australia.
From our parents humble beginnings, to the new innovative technology we implement today; this is just the beginning and we’re excited for the future.
